Wi-Fi troubleshooting checklist
- Run a wired test first to separate Wi-Fi problems from provider problems.
- Restart the router; unplug for 30 seconds if it has been on for months.
- Place the router high, central, and away from metal, mirrors, and aquariums.
- Connect important devices to the 5 GHz (or 6 GHz) band, not 2.4 GHz.
- Pause cloud backups and downloads on other devices while you test.
- Test near the router, then in the problem room, and compare.
- Replace routers older than five or six years — they cap modern plans.
- Persistent dead zones need a mesh node or a cabled access point, not a cheap repeater.
